'Reading to Learn Program' in Nashik and Ratnagiri - A Fair & Lovely Foundation Initiative with Pratham
The 'Reading to Learn Program' was initiated by Fair & Lovely Foundation and Pratham in the rural districts of Nashik and Ratnagiri (Maharashtra) in August 2008. This program was aimed at children between the age group of 6 to 14 years to enhance their reading, comprehension and arithmetic skills.
To meet these objectives two key teaching methods were used:
a) Understanding basic English by listening, comprehending and answering questions based on how?, what?, who?, is and are' and pronouncing words with phonetic awareness
b) In Language learning, steps were taken to ensure that the children who could read, moved to comprehension while in Arithmetic the move was to take children from just recognizing numbers up to 100 to solve division problems.
In Nashik, where the program was freshly initiated, it was necessary to bring most children up to the basic reading level before introducing them to the second phase of comprehension. In Ratnagiri where the education program is ongoing, all children were directly introduced to the comprehension program.
For this purpose, co-coordinators at the District and Block level were selected and trained in English, Language and Math for a month and half in Aurangabad in Aug '08. They were responsible for further selecting, training and monitoring cluster in-charges and volunteers (Shikshanagrahis) at the village level. This was primarily done by mobilizing people with the help of Gram samitis, Bachat Gats, Self Help Groups and College students. The number of villages and children covered in Nashik were 4356 and 109353 in Ratnagiri with the help of 4280 volunteers and 399 cluster in-charges. In addition to this, volunteers' were sent to build relations with Gramshikshan Committee by meeting with them to mobilizing more volunteers from the region. |
