Q How effective is this component in skin lightening?
The efficacy of sunscreens and antioxidants in protecting the skin from darkening and UV damage is already well known.  Additionally, topically applied Niacinamide does provide skin benefits in the form of improvement of skin texture and lightening of skin. This has been validated by other cosmetic manufacturers. It has also been cited in various textbooks and journals such as, “Textbook of Cosmetic Dermatology (3rd Edition) Ed. Howard E. Maibach and Robert Baran.” This book also lists Niacinamide as being the ideal ingredient for use in cosmetic products. Additionally, papers published in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals show that topical application of Vitamin B3 also helps in reducing the appearance of dark spots, fine lines, sunspots etc. and it also helps moisturize and smoothen the appearance of skin

Unilever's Skin Lightening technology has been proven in human volunteer studies conducted across different countries, regions and skin ethnicities to effectively, safely and reversibly lighten skin. This has been validated through instrumental analyses, digital photography and several national and international dermatologists who have helped conduct, monitor, review and endorse these studies and our claims.

Q Can Fair & Lovely cure a major pigmentation of the skin, or it can just heal a minor photo damage?
Fair & Lovely is a cosmetic product. Cosmetic products are not intended for treatment or cure of a medical condition on skin.

Our technology is cosmetic in nature and is not intended for 'treatment' of a medical problem such as hyper-pigmentation.  Our products deliver a perceivable skin lightening to the consumers and help address other skin issues (such as sun related darkening, oily look, rough appearance) which are all deterrent to perceiving fairness. We have specific products (i.e. our Anti marks range) which have been specially formulated to be effective on transient skin factors such as under-eye dark circles and post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (marks left behind by pimples etc.). However, all of these are transient issues and not any medical problem such as hyper-pigmentation disorder.

The benefits given by our technology/products are reversible (i.e. once the product application is discontinued, the consumer will revert back to their initial color/skin state within a few weeks. This is what makes our technology safe and unique.

The ingredients, actives and our products have been rigorously safety tested and there is adequate literature evidence available on all the ingredients used in our formulation in terms of their safety. The fact that we have been in the market of over 30 countries since the late 70's is a testament to our safety and efficacy.

The extent of the efficacy of our cream varies from person to person as well.
